This year’s Prisoners Week (November 17-23) invites us to hear the voices of people affected by or working in the Justice System.
The Week, themed ‘Hear My Voice’, will begin with a launch service in Letham St Mark’s Church of Scotland, Perth, at 3pm on November 17. The guest speaker will be Graham Bell, chaplain at HMP Glenochil. There will also be an opportunity to speak with charities and organisations working in Scotland’s prisons.
Other events around the week include ‘Listening to Distant Voices – when and why punishment fails’, an evening of live music, spoken word and interactive discussion at St George’s Tron Church in Glasgow on November 22. The evening will be hosted by leading Scottish criminologist Professor Fergus McNeill, with award-winning journalist Dani Garavelli and musicians Jo Mango and Louis Abbott. Tickets (donation) are available from https://www.eventbrite.com/e/listening-to-distant-voices-when-and-why-punishment-fails-tickets-1048676528727?
There is also a workshop exploring how you can be more involved in Prisoners Week, at Greenbank Parish Church, Edinburgh, on Thursday November 14.
The Prisoners Week Trust was set up in 2012, formalising Prisoners Week activities which have been running since the 1990s. The Trust encourages action and support, particularly among communities of faith, for all those affected by imprisonment: prisoners and their families, and those who have been released, as well as the victims of crime.
