Church's Irn Bru Advent Message

                                                                                                                        Tuesday December 3 2024

A CONGREGATION in Bearsden is bringing a special Advent message to their community through the power of Scotland’s ‘other’ national drink.

Members of Bearsden: New Kilpatrick, have gathered hundreds of used Irn Bru cans to create a special festive advent calendar. Displayed in a church window, a new word is hidden within the display every day.

The first two windows featured the words ‘light’ and ‘glory‘, hidden within the array of cans.

Minister, the Rev Roddy Hamilton, said: “A new word is created every day, chosen by our mid-week worship group.”

He added: “In truth it is finding the crossing point between culture and faith and especially when our church culture is so alien to most people.

“It has caused a bit of a crowd to form at times, working out what the word is. But then, that in itself creates community. Good news isn’t always easy to see, but when you see it, you can’t un-see it.”

Donations are being accepted for the daily window display which will go to support the work of Woman’s Aid.

The minister added: “It’s also a bit of a laugh with a wee message for everyone. We’ve drunk a lot of our ‘other national drink’.”
