The worship prepared for this year’s Week of Prayer for Christian Unity (WPCU), which begins this Saturday (January 18), is themed around the Nicene Creed.
This year marks the 1700th anniversary of the Council of Nicaea, the meeting of Christian bishops convened by the Roman Emperor Constantine I. One of the Council’s achievements was the first part of the Nicene Creed, the statement of belief adhered to by most major Christian denominations.
Reflecting this, the scripture readings for this year focus on belief, beginning with Martha’s confession of faith in Jesus: “I believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, who is to come into the world.” (John 11:27)
Traditionally the WPCU is celebrated between January 18-25, the feasts of St Peter and St Paul, with resources prepared by ecumenical partners in a particular region before being refined by an international editorial team of World Council of Churches and Roman Catholic representatives, and finally sent on to member churches to translate and adapt for use in their own contexts.
This year’s service has been prepared by the community of Bose, an ecumenical monastery of brothers and sisters in Northern Italy, and each of the eight days highlights a key statement of the Nicene Creed.
