Ahead of International Women’s Day, Christian Aid is hosting an online event tomorrow (Wednesday) to highlight the impact on women of food insecurity during a drought.
The webinar will focus on a project in Bulilima, Zimbabwe, which experienced a prolonged period of drought last year, leading to a declaration of national emergency.
Christian Aid, through its partner Zimbabwe Council of Churches, has been distributing essential food items, restoring water boreholes and supporting people to diversify their livelihoods.
The project, which is funded by the Scottish Government’s Humanitarian Fund, with additional funding from Christian Aid, has also sought to reduce gender violence in the community by improving access to information and support services.
Head of Christian Aid Scotland, Val Brown, said: “Women are disproportionately impacted during a food crisis, often reducing what they eat so that the rest of the family get enough food. Research has also shown there can be a spike in gender-based violence during times of drought.
“Our webinar, ahead of International Women’s Day will allow us to explore these important issues in more depth, look at what the project has achieved, while celebrating the amazing resilience of women.
“We’re looking forward to hearing from Christian Aid colleagues in Zimbabwe alongside our local partner, Zimbabwe Council of Churches.”
The webinar takes place on 5 March 2025 at midday. Register via the link below or email edinburgh@christan-aid.org
