'Breaking Bread' in Busby

Monday March 31 2025

Children from nearby primary schools, church members and the local MP gathered at Busby Parish Church, East Renfrewshire, last week at an event designed to raise awareness of global justice issues.

Organised by Christian Aid and the Church of Scotland’s Presbytery of Glasgow, the idea behind the 'Breaking Bread' event was to bring people of all ages together to have conversations, learn more about global justice issues and also to bring these issues to the attention of parliamentarians. It was attended by children from three schools, as well as Blair McDougall, MP for East Renfrew.

Lucy le Roux, campaigns and advocacy coordinator at Christian Aid Scotland, said: “It was wonderful to see so many people, of all ages, come along to our Breaking Bread event at Busby Parish Church. Since the UK General Election last summer we’ve been encouraging people to ‘break bread’ with their new MPs. We want local decision makers to put issues of global justice, like climate change and debt relief for low-income countries, at the top of their agendas.  I hope the many conversations which took place have sown important seeds.”

The Rev Janet Mathieson, Moderator of Glasgow Presbytery said: “It was good to participate in the latest Breaking Bread event held in Busby, organised by Christian Aid and the Presbytery of Glasgow’s Community Responsibility Committee. Conversations leading to action on climate justice are crucial to human well-being in all parts of the world and are also crucial to the well-being of our planet itself. That recently elected MPs such as Blair are committing time to such conversations and that local people of all ages are also taking part brings hope of achieving the justice for which so many long and which benefits us all. This is the church at its best: promoting a bigger vision of a world in which all know life in its fullness, the gift of God to us.”

The next event in this series takes place on May 2 at Cadder Parish Church, Bishopbriggs.  For more information email Lleroux@christian-aid.org and to read about Christian Aid’s ‘Breaking Bread’ campaign go to: www.christianaid.org.uk/get-involved/campaigns
