Edinburgh’s New Town Church book sale for Christian Aid Week raised £56,000.
The sale, in the former St Andrew’s and St George’s West Church on George Street, returned this year after a hiatus in 2024. Although slightly scaled back compared to previous years, supporters were still able to browse a range of books, ephemera, toys, records and CDs.
A round-up of Christian Aid Week activities in Scotland on the charity’s website also notes book sales at Kinnoull Church, in Perth, which raised around £1700, and the annual Holy Corner sale in Morningside United Church, Edinburgh.
Christian Aid staff planted seeds of hope at plant sales during the week, including the café and sale at Dunblane Cathedral, and events in Peebles and at Mearns Kirk; coffee mornings in Gullane, Livingston United and Newington Trinity churches, and quiz nights.
Special services were held throughout Scotland, most notably an 80th anniversary celebration for Christian Aid at St Giles’ Cathedral on May 17, at which First Minister John Swinney delivered the keynote address. And there were concerts and musical events, including one from the Kilmarnock Brass Band.
The blog entry pays tribute to Christian Aid supporters: “For over 80 years, supporters like you have been part of a movement built on hope—a hope that speaks out against injustice and stands firm against poverty. This Christian Aid Week, you kept that hope alive.”
