Glasgow 850 Knitting Project Exhibition

Monday June 9 2025

The first exhibition of blankets knitted or crocheted as part of a Glasgow churches project will be held later this month.

The blankets have been created for the Glasgow Close Knit Project, a joint initiative of Glasgow Presbytery and the Lodging House Mission, and part of Glasgow 850, a city-wide celebration marking eight-and-a-half centuries since the award of burgh status.

Congregations across the presbytery have been encouraged to knit or crotchet blankets to be distributed through the Mission to men and women using hostel accommodation across the city. The target is to create 850 blankets.

In March, the project was commended in the Scottish Parliament in a motion lodged by Glasgow MSP Sandesh Gullhane, which congratulated everyone involved and wished them all the best in completing the challenge.

Responding to the motion, the Moderator of Glasgow Presbytery, Rev Janet Mathieson, said: "Glasgow Close Knit takes inspiration from a Bible verse which speaks of ' being close knit together in love'.

"As Glasgow celebrates the 850th anniversary of the city becoming a Bishop's Burgh, I felt it was important to acknowledge and build on Glasgow's heritage as a caring and compassionate place in which people cared for each other, especially those in most need.

"Working with the Rev Peter Gardner, minister to the visual arts community, and Church of Scotland Deacon Claire Herbert, chaplain to the Lodging House Mission, Glasgow Close Knit was launched.”

The first exhibition is at the Drying Green, Glasgow Green on Sunday June 22 from 10am-5pm. There will be further exhibitions of completed blankets later in the year, at venues around the city.

Life and Work is the magazine of the Church of Scotland. June issue out now.

“Our churches,St Mary’s Duntocher and St. Joseph's Faifley, are Catholic Churches, but we have been knitting and have deposited our squares. Wonderful project. Have advertised the Glasgow green event on our parish Facebook. ”
