Benedict Lewis-Smith
A free charity concert will take place this Sunday (June 15) at St Columba’s Church of Scotland in London.
The Knightsbridge church’s musical director, Benedict Lewis-Smith, will be performing Bach’s Goldberg Variations, starting at 1.30pm.
Benedict combines his role at the church with a substantial freelance career in London including vocal coaching, accompanying and conducting. He has established choirs for a number of the city firms and in 2018 founded his own group, the Iona Consort. He has broadcast on BBC Radio 3, and recently recorded on the digital label Resonus Classics and Regent Records. Recent performances include recitals in the Victoria International Arts Festival, Gozo, and a concert tour of Buenos Aires.
Sunday’s concert is free entry, but is in aid of Jessie’s Fund, a charity helping children with serious illnesses and complex needs to express themselves through music.
Benedict states on his fundraising page: “I’ve finally decided to take on the challenge of learning (and performing!) Bach’s Goldberg Variations and I can think of no better reason to do so than to support the incredible work of Jessie’s Fund.”
Further free concerts, under the title ‘Sounds of St Columba’s’, will take place in September and November.
Life and Work is the magazine of the Church of Scotland. June issue out now.
