A new CD of organ music has been recorded at an Edinburgh church, with proceeds going to a scholarship fund for aspiring singers.
The Organ Favourites CD was recorded by Morley Whitehead, organist of Morningside Parish Church, on the church’s 1901 Father Willis organ.
Mr Whitehead writes in Console, the magazine of the Edinburgh Society of Organists, that inspiration for the recording came during the Covid-19 lockdown when it was remarked bow the sound of the organ was improved by the removal of chairs from the church nave.
“It was suggested that a fully professional recording should be made,” Mr Whitehead writes. “This, for a number of reasons, took some little while to bring about; but now, at long last, and recorded when the chairs were once again, for another purpose entirely, absent, an hour-long CD is available.”
Writing in the same magazine, Edinburgh city organist John Kitchen says: “Morley knows the organ better than anyone and puts it through its pace with great skill, displaying a wide variety of colours.”
The CD is available for £10 from the church office at office@morningsideparishchurch.org.uk or 0131 447 6745. All proceeds go to the church’s Choral Scholarship Fund.
