CrossReach, the social care arm of the Church of Scotland, has become the first social care provider in Scotland to appoint a ‘Dementia Ambassador’ in each of its services for older people.
The role has been developed by the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) to develop its ‘promoting excellence in dementia care’ programme.
The ambassadors, who are volunteers recruited from the staff in each service, receive extra training in dementia care and share their expertise with other staff. They are also a point of contact for relatives and visitors with questions or concerns about dementia.
Linda Kelly, CrossReach’s second Dementia Development Officer, told CrossReach News: “It’s very exciting that CrossReach is breaking new frontiers in the care sector by pioneering Dementia Ambassadors in all our services to older people. The role was created to provide support to the management and support team, while establishing a focus in promoting good dementia care within services.”
