Christmas charity ALTERnativity is harnessing the power of social media this year to encourage people to simplify their Christmas.
The Glasgow-based organisation has learned that people feel more confident about resisting the pressure put on them by advertisers, family or inherited traditions when they commit to changing their behaviour together. So, this year, ALTERnativity hopes to capture the national mood for talking about big issues with a new social media campaign called #SimplyChristmas.
Through November, the charity will be encouraging people to think of one thing that they could do to simplify their festivities and to share it with their friends via Facebook, Twitter or the ALTERnativity website.
Maggie Lunan, co-chair of ALTERnativity, said: “Our message hasn’t changed over the last twenty years: Christmas needs to be simpler, for everyone. But the times have changed. In this post-referendum society, we’re talking more about money, equality and external pressures to conform. Maybe this is the year that Scotland could talk about how to celebrate Christmas less stressfully.”
