In Search of Jane Haining

Thursday November 27 2014

A BBC programme on the Scottish WW2 heroine Jane Haining airs this Sunday, November 30.

The documentary – the first on Jane’s story -  follows Sally Magnusson as she pieces together a picture of this quiet Church of Scotland missionary, who refused to leave the Jewish girls under her care at the Scottish Mission School in Budapest, even after the Nazis occupied Hungary in March 1944.

Sally traces Jane Haining’s story to Auschwitz-Birkenau, where she was sent after being convicted of trumped up charges of espionage and sympathising with the Jews. She died in July 1944.

Moving tributes from a number of Jane’s former pupils, now in their eighties, paint a portrait of a strict but loving Scottish lady whose sacrifice has made a lasting impact.

Jane Haining: The Scot who died in Auschwitz will be broadcast on Sunday at 5.20pm on BBC One Scotland. Viewers outside Scotland can access BBC One Scotland on Sky 141 (HD) and 951, Freesat 108 (HD) and 960, Virgin Media 108 (HD) and 862. It will also be available across the UK after transmission on BBC iPlayer.
