Parish News Round-Up

Thursday November 27

Our weekly round-up of news received from local churches.

The youngest Beadle in the Church of Scotland? Liam Grant, age 16, is pictured during his Beadle (Church Officer) duties as part of his training for his Queens Award Badge at Netherlee Parish Church, Glasgow. Liam and fellow BB members Alex McArthur, Ross McAskill and David Lambie are assisting with other duties such as teaching in the Sunday Club, operation of the Audio Visual Desk and escort on the BB Minibus bringing the elderly to and from morning service as part of the "Community Service" content of the Award.

Beath and Cowdenbeath North Church celebrated the centenary of its building with a weekend of events from October 10-12.

A celebration was held on the Friday night, attended by almost 100 members and friends. Speakers included the present minister, the Rev David Redmayne; and his two predecessors, the Rev Cameron McKenzie and the Rev Peter Rae. The evening included talks on the church’s history, songs and poetry.

On the Saturday the church held a children’s fun day and centenary exhibition.

Then on the Sunday the Very Rev David Arnott was the guest preacher at a centenary service and presented long service certificates.

The centenary weekend completed a year of activities, including a silent auction, people’s praise service and a congregational meal.

The Guild of Portobello Old Parish Church celebrated their 70th anniversary with an afternoon tea party, birthday cake and entertainment of song and magic. It was a joyous occasion despite being tinged with sadness as it was the last meeting of Portobello Old, which is now part of the new Guild of Portobello and Joppa Parish Church.

As a memento each member was given a Guild cup and saucer.
