The director of a groundbreaking film about her home town of Bethlehem will speak at screenings across Scotland next week.
Leila Sansour returned to Bethlehem, which was soon to be encircled by a wall, to make a film in tribute to her late father, founder of Bethlehem University. She had planned to stay for a year, but a relative persuaded her to stay and start a campaign to save the city.
While telling a personal story, Open Bethlehem charts the creation of a campaign to compel international action to bring peace to the Middle East. Reports predict that if trends continue the Christian community of Bethlehem, a city that campaigners say is a model for a multifaith Middle East, may be unsustainable within one generation.
It is drawn from 700 hours of original footage and some rare archive material – in fact the making of the film has led to the creation of the largest visual archive of Bethlehem in the world, and plans are being discussed to turn the collection into a museum.
Screenings, followed by a Q&A with Leila Sansour, will take place from Thursday next week:
There are further dates throughout England. Full details on the Open Bethlehem website.
