Parish News Round-up

Thursday January 8 2015

Our weekly round-up of news received from local churches.

The teen group at New Laigh Kirk in Kilmarnock, Trekkers – The Next Generation, conducted Sunday worship on November 23. This video shows the highlights of the service. Read a full report in the March magazine.

A year of significant events in Logie & St. John’s (Cross) Church in Dundee concluded on Sunday December 21 with the visit of the Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, the Rt Rev John Chalmers.

During September, the church celebrated the centenary of its building. Then, in October, the Rev David Gray was inducted as the new Minister.

During his visit, the Moderator presented the church with a commemorative stained glass plaque, depicting a dove of peace, made in Bethlehem. He is pictured with the Session Clerk, John Dent, and Mr Gray.

Perth: St Leonard’s-in-the-Fields Church paid tribute to its senior elder, Drummond Johnston, who has given 60 years of unstinting service to his kirk.

Paying tribute to six decades as a member of the Kirk Session, the minister, the Rev James Wallace, said that Drummond (88) was held in high regard by everyone at St Leonard’s-in-the Fields: “He exemplifies an enduring faith - a truly lifelong commitment,” he said. “I feel privileged to know him and it is right that we should celebrate with him on reaching this milestone. What a journey!”

Born into the congregation on May 5, 1926, Drummond gave over 30 years’ service as a sunday school teacher - beginning when he was a schoolboy.
A skilled craftsman, he not only put his joinery talents to use at St Leonard’s-in-the-Fields, but, on two occasions, answered the call of the Rev George MacLeod of the Iona Community, for tradesmen to assist in the restoration of Iona Abbey.
