The Rev Lorna Hood (right) and an aide took the ring, a duplicate of the one stolen last month, into a jeweller's to have it resized for her finger.
However staff at the jeweller's workshop mistook the ring for the stolen one and called the Police. They in turn called the Church's administrative offices to say the ring had been found.
Lorna said: “I thought my official photos as Moderator might end up on Crimewatch or end up with a serial number in front of it. I was thinking how it must seem and conclusions that might be drawn. Two suspicious ladies walk into a shop. New Moderator is international jewel thief.”
The ring (left) is set with a large amethyst engraved with the burning bush symbol. The original, along with the Moderator's gold cross, was in a bag taken from Edinburgh Airport in early April. A four-figure reward has been offered for the return of the items.

“What happened with the original cross and ring? If you'd please let me know in which issue of Life and Work, I can check.
Sadly, our church no longer subscribes to Life and Work, and I very much miss it. Especially since the monthly publication we do get is so inferior in every way. Our loss, indeed.”
