New Laigh Kirk in Kilmarnock was transformed into a magical winter wonderland on November 29 when it hosted The Narnia Experience, a large interactive theatre event.

The experience was based on the story of C S Lewis’s The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, the most famous of C.S. Lewis' books in The Chronicles of Narnia. People entering the church discovered the 'Spare Room'. Lucy Pevensie appeared and took them through the wardrobe into the forest of Narnia. In Narnia 'it is always winter and never Christmas', so when people stepped through the wardrobe into Narnia, they were each given a scarf to wear.

Along the way they met Lucy's friend, the faun Mr Tumnus at the lamppost, and trespassed in the White Witch's palace where they heard how Edmund was tricked into betraying his brother and sisters. Aslan himself was found at Stone Table where he sacrificed his life to save the traitor.

The experience was completed by visiting C S Lewis at his desk, who told the audience of the deeper meaning behind the story.

In total 592 people went through the The Narnia Experience in one afternoon, queuing for up to an hour and a half in wind, rain and hail.

"We used the Narnia Experience to launch our Advent and Christmas outreach activities," said church minister the Rev David Cameron. "This was a fantastic way to bring the Christian message to many families who may not venture into a church to celebrate Christmas. There was a great response from our congregation to transform our church and enact the characters of Narnia as well as a fantastic response from adults and children of the town queuing up in driving wind and rain."

“It has definitely been a multi-generational effort. From the oldest to the youngest, everyone has been involved in the preparations for Narnia.” said Bethany McCaw, the church’s youth and community worker. “Children have painted scenery, some of the young people are actors were the performance, even older ladies who no longer make it out of their home have been able to contribute and feel part of The Narnia Experience by knitting scarves for the event.”

On Sunday November 29 the Rev Alison Mehigan, minister of Nairn Old Parish Church, presented John Fraser with a long service certificate marking 60 years’ service as an organist and choirmaster with the Church of Scotland.

John started as an organist in Ferryhill Church in Aberdeen and moved eight times to churches in Aberdeen, Coupar Angus, Dundee, Keith, Buckie, Peterhead and Stonehaven before arriving at Nairn Old, where he has been organist for the past 10 years.

On Sunday November 29, towards the end of the Moderatorial visit to Westminster, the Rt Rev Dr Angus Morrison preached at the morning service at Crown Court Church of Scotland in Covent Garden.  During the service he presented long-service certificates to five elders: Raymond Dyke (45 years), John Mowbray (43 years), Willie Ross (40 years), Alison Dartnell (30 years) and Ron Campbell (30 years).  The Moderator and Mrs Morrison enjoyed lunch with the congregation after the service, and even managed a bit of Christmas shopping at the Christmas Market stall.
