Moderator Joins Lisbon Celebrations

Tuesday April 12

The Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland led the celebrations as the Church in Portugal marked its 150th anniversary.

The Rev Dr Angus Morrison preached at the service of celebration in St Andrew’s Lisbon. Among the guests were ambassadors from the UK, South Africa and Hungary, and representatives of the Roman Catholic, German Evangelical, Orthodox and Church of England churches in the city.

Following the service, the Scottish Country Dance group who meet in the church hall performed a special dance composed in honour of the Moderator; and Dr Morrison cut the anniversary cake.

The congregation was established in Lisbon by the Free Church of Scotland in 1866, making it the oldest Presbyterian church in mainland Portugal. It moved to its present building in Rua Arriaga in 1899, and joined the majority of Free Church congregations in the new United Free Church of Scotland in 1900 and then the Church of Scotland in 1929.
