Roslin Church, with the linked congregations of Bilston and Glencorse, in Midlothian, held an exhibition of Wedding Dresses through the Decades on June 1-5.

Nearly 600 visitors enjoyed the exhibition, which was inspired by a similar show in Orkney last year. Altogether there were 32 dresses, (plus 2 suits and a kilt) all on loan from members, families and friends of the three congregations.

The oldest dress was from 1909, the newest from 2015 and some from the war years when clothing coupons had to be saved up. Although none from the 1910s or 20s were found, these styles could be seen in a slide show running in the hall where many happy memories continued over tea and coffee. There were two mother and daughter brides and a third with a grandmother. She had twins and both christening robes were shown with the family group.

Of the other 17 christening robes, the oldest was from 1879. The family story that the first baby to wear it was born in June, 1879 and crossed the Tay Bridge only weeks before the terrible rail disaster in December that year.

Rothienorman Parish Church, in Aberdeenshire, as part of their Stewardship Campaign, held an enjoyable Rededication Day on Sunday June 12, when it marked the 80th Anniversary of the laying of the Church’s Foundation Stone.

The Morning Service, conducted by the Rev R J Thorburn, included congregational involvement and musical accompaniment from the Rothienorman Music Group. A handcrafted quilt was presented to Morag Taylor, organist and music group leader.

At an evening celebration held in the Greenview Centre, a large number of people gathered to hear The Fyvie Community Choir perform a selection of songs from their recent repertoire of movie theme songs. Another surprise presentation was made to long standing stalwarts of the Church, Sandy and Isabel Sim, who were presented with a ‘This is Your Life – Together’ book in recognition of many years devoted service to the church and in celebration of their recent diamond wedding anniversary.
