EMMS Malawi Appeal

Wednesday July 20

Scottish Christian charity EMMS International has launched its own appeal to bring emergency food aid to people affected by drought in Malawi.

Millions of people are going hungry in Malawi after the failure of the harvest, following last year's devastating floods.

James Wells, Chief Executive of EMMS International, said: “We know that hunger hits the poorest and most vulnerable hardest. We are determined to do all that we can to stop people in Malawi suffering further hardship following the floods of 2015 and this years drought. The situation is becoming increasingly urgent.”

“Scotland and Malawi have a special bond of friendship. At times like this that friendship is so important and we’re grateful to the Scottish Government for their support of this appeal. We are sure that the people of Scotland and beyond will be equally generous in their support.”

Mphatso Nguluwe of EMMS’ partner organisation in Malawi added: “Imagine, homes, crops and all that people had is gone. People have lost their lives. Disease is looming and there is a poor harvest this year even without the floods. This means the food crisis in the country will continue into next year.”

Funds raised will provide emergency food supplies to some of the most vulnerable groups including orphans, people living with HIV and people with disabilities. It will also help farmers to grow more food and store it for the difficult months to come.

Christian Aid Scotland also launched an appeal last week, and the Scottish Government has pledged to match donations.
