TV Adventurer Explores Faith

Thursday September 1

TV adventurer Bear Grylls features in a new series of films released this autumn by Alpha.

The series, exploring the question ‘Is there more to life than this?’, is aimed at helping non-Christians explore the basics of the faith, which Bear Grylls describes as ‘my greatest adventure’.

They also feature Alpha founder the Rev Nicky Gumbel, and presenters the Rev Toby Flint and Gemma Hunt.

Since Alpha started over 20 years ago in Nicky Gumbel’s parish church in London, more than 29 million people have tried Alpha in churches, universities, cafes and prisons in 169 countries and it has been translated into 112 languages. Last year more than 23,000 people tried Alpha in churches throughout Scotland.

The release coincides with the annual Alpha Invitation, with billboards and buses displaying posters to help increase awareness of Alpha to make it easier for Christians to invite non-Church friends.

The Scottish launch of the films took place at this year’s General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, and was attended by more than 90 commissioners.

The Rev Dr Martin Fair, convener of the Church of Scotland’s Church Without Walls group, said: "With the new film series resource and September's global Alpha Invitation featuring Bear Grylls, if ever there was a year to do Alpha, it's this year, 2016.

"Although my teenage boys aren't desperate to hear what I think, they sit up and listen when Bear Grylls speaks!

"I'm hoping the short films and the Alpha invitation are going to help churches invite their communities to Alpha like never before."
