Deacons are a vital part of the ministry of the Church of Scotland, according to the Moderator of the General Assembly.

The Moderator, the Rt Rev Lorna Hood was the principal guest  at a special dinner to celebrate 125 years of the Diaconal Ministry in Dundee.

“God is with us in the situations we need him to be,” she said. “You see the needs of the world and call the Church to respond to these needs, using your different gifts and talents through the years. You are the expression of a God who is with us, especially at the edges of life.”

She added: “I hope by the response of the General Assembly, that you realise you are valued and have an important place in the Church.

“Often, the face of the Church to the public is that of Ministers and Elders. Perhaps we, as a Church, need to show more of how much we value what you do. Perhaps we need to promote the Diaconate more."

The dinner was the conclusion of a two-day conference attended by Deacons from across Scotland. Other guests included the Rev Neil Dougall, Convener of the Ministries Council, Marjorie Paton, National Convenor of the Guild and the Moderator of the Presbytery of Dundee, Catherine Coull.
