Two churches in Perth City Centre got together to help local church members experience the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland last month.

The linked charges of St John’s Kirk and St Leonard’s in the Fields set up screens showing the live stream from the Assembly Halls throughout the week.

A small group from various congregations around the city used the service, in St Leonard’s each morning and the Knox Chapel in St John’s each afternoon, with some commenting that it was good to be able to watch the Assembly proceedings as part of a group.

This wooden cross has been created by a local craftsman for Bervie Church in Aberdeenshire.

The cross was commissioned by the Rev Linda Broadley, and is to be gifted to the church where she is currently locum minister. The artist, Martin Openshaw, used only wood gathered from within a three-mile radius of his village, St Cyrus.

Linda said: “Martin had never made anything specifically for a church before but said how much he enjoyed the challenge and I just love the end result - far beyond what I had hoped for.”

A concert featuring Dunfermline Choral Union and Junior Chorus was the latest event in the series of events celebrating the 800th anniversary of Culross Abbey. A packed abbey was treated to a range of music from musicals to classics and songs in languages from around the world.

Elder John Laird said: “The Kirk Session is extremely appreciative of the support of the Choral Union’s Conductor Mandy Miller, Accompanist Yvonne Ferguson, Percussionist Tom Lowe and all members of both choirs for putting on such an outstanding event and I hope they may return at some point in the future”. John also thanked the members of Dunfermline Abbey and Limekilns Parish Church who provided assistance in many ways on the evening.“

A unique church garden in Edinburgh is open this weekend as part of an annual Canal Festival.

Polwarth Parish Church, which is known as the Kirk on the Canal, is hosting a variety of stalls and providing refreshments to the public on Saturday to celebrate the city’s waterways. Read more on the Church of Scotland website.
