More than 120 Boys’ Brigade members and leaders descended upon the Isle of Cumbrae for an action-packed four days of outdoor activities and challenges at the end of May.
From hiking and sailing to kayaking and mountain biking, the young people aged 11 to 15 and their leaders all got a chance to take part in the various activities designed to challenge, educate and inspire them to try new experiences.
The young people belonged to 12 different company sections from all over Scotland, including Glasgow, Stirling, Bankfoot in Perthshire and Dunbar in East Lothian.
John Sharp, director of the Boys’ Brigade in Scotland, attended the event, which saw many of the young people experience camping and these particular outdoor activities for the first time.
John said: “What a trip! It’s such a fantastic opportunity for young people to experience camping and outdoor activities, which for many, is a first.
“Some of our members rarely get the chance to experience somewhere like the Isle of Cumbrae, so it was great that this was their first experience of a BB camp. The island is home to beautiful beaches and Scottish wildlife so it’s great to give the young people the opportunity to explore a different part of the country they ordinarily might not see.
“The activities we offered also gave everyone a chance to try something new and push themselves whilst having a lot of fun. Whether it was kayaking or mountain biking for the adrenaline-seekers or sand-castle building and playing football, there was something for everyone. The weather wasn’t too bad either, which is always a bonus when sleeping under the stars!”
The camp, organised by BB Scotland and teams from Ayrshire and Glasgow, was the first national event of its kind for many years. It was also in line with the BB’s latest campaign to increase participation in physical activity.
