Donate a Book for Nelson Mandela Day

The Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland has paid tribute to Nelson Mandela on his 95th birthday.

The Rt Rev Lorna Hood described Mr Mandela as: "A colossus of a man, whose strength, courage and determination are only matched by his grace and ability to forgive.

"He is forever associated not only with the end of apartheid in South Africa but the manner in which the change was accomplished.

"Emerging from prison after 27 years in Robben Island, without bitterness or a call for revenge, he led by example believing that the only hope for his country was the reconcilation of all people regardless of their colour or creed.

"Nelso Mandela is the epitome of a man who has never given up hope but believes wholeheartedly that no injustice can last forever and that evil will not have the last word."The United Nations has designated Mr Mandela's birthday, July 18, as Nelson Mandela International Day, when people throughout the world are encouraged to give 67 minutes of voluntary service to the community in whatever way they choose, to help change the world for the better. This year the Church of Scotland is supporting ACTSA Scotland (Action for Southern Africa) in their call for people to use their 67 minutes to sort out and donate children's books to be sent to school libraries in Nelson Mandela's home province of Eastern Cape.ACTSA has collection points in Dundee, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Kilmarnock, Inverness and Paisley.
