Parish Church Raises Thousands for Ethiopian Mothers and Babies

A Christian Aid Community Partnership project helping mums and babies in Ethiopia has received nearly £7,000 from fundraisers at St Fillan’s Church in Aberdour, Fife.

Successful fundraising events included a bake sale, concert, coffee mornings, a sponsored walk, a ‘Swishing’ event and even a Lego themed fundraiser.

Lesley Gordon, Christian Aid organiser at St Fillan’s Church, said: “Although we initially hoped to raise £5,000, we were delighted to have raised much more and have the generosity of church members and the people of Aberdour to thank for that. A special mention must also go to the enthusiasm shown by the children from the church whose bake sales were a big success.

“Because we fundraised through the Community Partnership scheme, we had regular updates about how the project was progressing and we are really pleased that we’ve been able to make a positive contribute to the lives of these women and girls”.

Mary Mulligan, Churches Development Officer, Christian Aid Scotland, said: “Christian Aid established the project in Southern Ethiopia to improve the health and well-being of girls and women. The main focus was to improve the health services available for pregnant women, encourage ante-natal and post-natal care and increase the number of women who were supported by trained midwives plus educating young people on the use of contraceptives and reducing the number of teenage pregnancies.

"Christian Aid’s projects like this would not exist if it wasn’t for the brilliant fundraising efforts of churches like St Fillian’s and the support their events receive from the local community”.
