The Scottish homelessness charity Bethany Christian Trust is hosting its annual Big Sleep Out on Friday March 16.
This is the 17th year of the Big Sleep Out, which has so far seen 2000 people sleep under the stars in various locations, raising nearly £400,000 for Bethany’s work. As well as raising funds, participants catch a glimpse of what it is like to sleep on the streets.
There are two large-scale sleep outs, outside the city chambers in Edinburgh and Glasgow, but people are encouraged to hold their own events if they cannot get to either of them. Anyone taking part is asked to aim for a target pledge of £100.
Bethany was established in 1983 by the Rev Alan Berry, a minister in Leith, Edinburgh. Working across Scotland, it provides emergency shelter and support for people on the streets (last winter’s Winter Care Shelter for Edinburgh and the Lothians provided beds and hot meals for over 700 people between October and April), resettlement help, and community projects combatting some of the causes of homelessness.
