Christian Aid Scotland Marks International Women's Day with Exhibition

Monday March 5 2018

Christian Aid will mark International Women’s Day on Thursday March 8 with an event at the Scottish Parliament showcasing the work of ‘Side by Side’, the global faith movement for gender justice.

The event will also host the exhibition ‘Faith in Gender Justice’, which tells the stories of sixteen women of faith who are working to challenge gender inequality both here and around the world. These include Dr Alison Elliot OBE, former Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, and academic and campaigner Dr Lesley Orr among others.

In each case, women in Scotland are paired with women doing similar work elsewhere in the world: for gender justice in health and education, through campaigning, climate work and leadership, against domestic abuses and poverty, and for refugees.

Kathy Galloway, chair of ‘Side by Side’ Scotland said: “We are delighted to be celebrating International Women’s Day by sharing the stories of inspirational women who have worked tirelessly, often under very difficult circumstances, to challenge some of the narratives around gender that prevent equal access to rights, resources and power.

“We hope that our work raises awareness of the importance of decision makers and faith organisations working together to create gender equality, and our vision is that Side by Side as a movement can be a valuable tool for this happening in Scotland”.
