Saturday April 11 2020
We too are scattered now
into the silence of Saturday
into the chasm of absence
into the overwhelm of loss.
As the number of coronavirus deaths
rises daily to new heights
we go down to new depths
of collective grief.
We dread the spread,
the colossal toll of disease and death
where there is no space to self-isolate
where soap and water are not at hand.
Scattered but united in stunned silence
as with the disciples that first Holy Saturday:
what was normal has been buried,
a stone has been rolled over broken hearts.
But even here
in this dark confusion
in this hellish reality
in this deathly silence
you are with us.
You have been here before.
Thanks be to God.
Amen
