Holy Week Reflections: Wednesday

Wednesday March 27

Journey through Holy Week with daily reflections from the Rev Roddy Hamilton

Mark 14:10-11

Then Judas Iscariot, who was one of the twelve, went to the chief priests in order to betray him to them. When they heard it, they were greatly pleased, and promised to give him money. So he began to look for an opportunity to betray him.

Reflection

It was one of the twelve who did it.

And so they were all guilty by association.

Judas ‘one of the twelve’
Is how he is described
Repeatedly.

‘One of the twelve’

It was an inside job
The in-crowd
Those with a seat at the table

And every rumour
And every conspiracy
And every theory
We have invented
Has been used to distract us
Move us away from any blame

‘One of the twelve’
Brings it back
And places it
At our feet

Every sponsor we have performed for
Every heritor we have obeyed
Every power we have been persuaded by
Every piece of bad theology
Every substitution we have made
Every ransom we have never paid

We call him Judas
But he is us
A fiction in the story
Where it could be us standing
Betraying
Conspiring
A writers technique
We don’t want to recognise
But just underneath the name
We hear our own

It was one of the twelve who did it
It was one of us

Prayer

Holy God
The pain is knowing
This story is real
And the truth is knowing
This story is now
May we hear the horror of it
Not from the past
But in the present
And we confess
What we have done
And bow our heads
When there is nothing more we can say
