John Byrne Self-Portrait Up for Auction at Christian Aid Sale

Friday May 11 2018

Edinburgh’s Christian Aid Week sales open tomorrow (Saturday) with the star items including a John Byrne self-portrait and a rare Ian Rankin first edition.

The sale at St Andrew’s and St George’s West Church, believed to be the largest charity book sale in the country, opens at 10am, and as usual the church (and pavement outside) will be completely taken over by thousands of items sorted and priced by hundreds of volunteers.

The patron for this year’s event is artist and playwright John Byrne, who has donated a self-portrait for auction. Organisers are inviting sealed bids by 10.30am tomorrow, with a reserve price of £5000. To make a bid email churchmanager@stagw.org.uk

Other highlights this year include a signed first edition of Ian Rankin’s first book, Knots and Crosses; the rare 1865 ‘The Ruined Abbeys of the Border’, illustrated by Scottish photography pioneers Wilson and Thompson; and the complete works of Sir Walter Scott in a hundred volumes, published in 1844.

Mary Davidson, sale convener, said: “We hope that people will come along and find treasures among the books and other things for sale, remembering that the money they spend will help to support some of the poorest communities in the world.”

The St Andrew’s and St George’s Sale takes place from Saturday May 12 until Friday May 18 from 10am-3.30pm, closed Sunday, open until 7pm Thursday.

There are also book sales in at Holy Corner and at the City of Edinburgh Methodist Church.

The Holy Corner sale, at Morningside United Church on Chamberlain Road is open from Saturday May 12 until Saturday May 19. Opening hours are 10am-5pm on the two Saturdays, 1.30-4.30pm on Sunday, 11am-6pm throughout the week.

The newest sale, at the Methodist Church in Nicolson Square, also features a series of events and appearances by authors throughout the week. It is open from Saturday May 12 – Friday May 18, from 11am-4pm

Details of these and other Christian Aid Week events in Scotland are available on the Christian Aid events page.
