Welcome for £100,000 donation to Syria Crisis Appeal from Scottish Government

THE Disasters Emergency Committee in Scotland has welcomed a second £100,000 donation to the Syria Crisis Appeal by the Scottish Government.

The donation was announced by the Education Secretary Michael Russell at the Scottish Parliament, and follows an initial £100,000 contribution announced by the First Minister in March.

Generous Scots have already contributed more than £1 million to the UK-wide appeal to help the six million people who have been driven from their homes as a result of the conflict in Syria. More than 100,000 people have been killed.

Judith Robertson, Chair of DEC in Scotland said: “We hugely appreciate this donation from the Scottish Government, which takes their total donation up to £200,000.

“With ordinary people in Syria feeling more vulnerable than ever, the humanitarian need continues to grow and the need for money to support the response is urgent."

She added: “Every donation makes a real difference and will help the DEC agencies continue to provide life-saving aid to families affected by the conflict."

The joint appeal is working both in Syria and neighbouring countries providing water, medicine and clothing for the millions of people that have been forced to flee their homes - including an estimated 4.25 million in Syria alone.

The DEC brings 14 leading UK aid charities together in times of crisis: Action Aid, Age International, British Red Cross, CAFOD, Care International, Christian Aid, Concern Worldwide, Islamic Relief, Merlin, Oxfam, Plan UK, Save the Children, Tearfund and World Vision; all collectively raising money to reach those in need quickly.

The DEC has run 62 appeals and raised more than £1.1 billion since launching in 1963.
