Support for Kinship Carers

Wednesday September 25 2013

The Church of Scotland has given its support to the National Day of Action for Kinship Care, which will seek to encourage further political support for vulnerable children are living with non-parental family and friends.

More than 100 members of the Scottish Kinship Carers Alliance will demonstrate outside the Scottish Parliament today to demand that support for the children in their care is not cut as part of the Children and Young People's Bill.

They will be joined in Edinburgh by MSPs and members of the public that also support their cause. There are also demonstrations planned to take place in regional areas across the country.

Research on Kinship Care recently revealed that 1 in 71 children in Scotland lived in Kinship Care in 2001, and the majority of those placements were unsupported by the Local Authority. Reports have also shown revealed that Kinship placements are rising rapidly, with up to five new placements each month in certain areas across Scotland.

The Rev Dr Martin Johnstone, the Church of Scotland's Priority Areas Secretary, said: “It is time for politicians to stop talking and start really delivering for children in kinship care. I hope that those who are demonstrating on Wednesday will be heard by every politician in the Scottish Parliament.”

“These extraordinary women and men are the people who really know what needs to be done. Listen to them and you will go a long way to getting it right for every child in Kinship Care.”
