Makar Reading for Palestine Charity

Monday July 29 2019

The Scots Makar is to give a poetry reading in Edinburgh next month in aid of Hadeel, the Palestinian fairtrade charity.

At the afternoon event on August 18, Jackie Kay will discuss aspects of her highly acclaimed work and read some of her poems. The reading will be followed by a Q&A session and there will be an opportunity to purchase signed copies of her books.

It will be chaired by Henry Bell, co-editor of A Bird is Not a Stone, an anthology of translated Palestinian poetry.

Jackie Kay is the third modern Makar, the Scottish poet laureate. Born in Edinburgh, she was brought up by adoptive parents in Glasgow. Her first book of poetry was published in 1991 and won the Saltire Society Scottish First Book Award. She is currently Professor of Creative Writing at Newcastle University and Cultural Fellow at Glasgow Caledonian University. She gave a reading as part of a special session of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland in 2017.

Hadeel is a social enterprise operated by Palcrafts (UK), which aims to provide a source of income for craftspeople working with social enterprises in the West Bank, Gaza, Galilee and the Negev. The shop in the Church of Scotland offices on George Street sells crafts, books and fairtrade food.

The event takes place at Christ Church, Morningside on Sunday August 18, starting at 2pm. Tickets cost £14 (concessions £12, under 16s £10) and are available from jackiekayafternoon.eventbrite.co.uk

“Is it possible to pay ‘on the day’? I am not confident paying on line for things yet I am interested in going.”

“Hi Rosemary, you can also get tickets from the Hadeel shop (123 George Street). If you can't get there, I'd suggest contacting them direct on info@hadeel.org, 0131 225 1922.”
