Scotland's Christians Take a StAnd

Tuesday October 22 2013

Christians across Scotland are invited to take part in 'The StAnd': a national year of prayer, commencing on St Andrew's Day (November 30).

The coalition behind the initiative is calling on churches, families, groups and individuals to sign up to pray for an hour each week for God's kingdom to come and His will to be done in Scotland throughout a potentially momentous year, which includes the Independence Referendum on September 14 and Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

It was inspired by the one hundred years of prayer undertaken by the Moravian Church in eighteenth century Germany, in a small village called Herrnhut.

The team behind The StAnd includes Tearfund, Alpha Scotland, the Evangelical Alliance and several churches including Kirkliston Parish Church of Scotland.

Lynne Paterson, Director of Tearfund Scotland, said: "We can't replicate the move of God experienced by the Moravians, but we can take time - take a StAnd together - to seek Him in prayer and fasting, in worship and repentance. We trust that as we do our part, God will also do His."

The year of prayer will be launched at a 12-hour worship and prayer event on St Andrew's Day, November 30, at Queen's Park Baptist Church in Glasgow.

Fred Drummond, Director of the Evangelical Alliance in Scotland, added: "The media have been calling the Independence Referendum on September 18 2014 Scotland's 'Day of Destiny'. Regardless of the outcome, we want to pray throughout the year that God's destiny for Scotland will be the one that prevails."
