Moderator's Rallying Call for Baptism

Wednesday October 23 2013

The Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland  has called on parents to talk to their ministers about baptism and its meaning.

The Sacrament of Baptism is in the public eye thanks to the Christening of Prince George, which is to take place later today.

The Rt Rev Lorna Hood said: “For me as a Church of Scotland minister and a school chaplain one of the greatest delights is to baptise children of those I have baptised. It is such a joyful occasion and it isn’t just for new babies either. I’ve lost count of how many babies and infants I have baptised but one of my loveliest memories is of baptising a mother and her five children, aged twelve to twelve weeks, all the same time.”

Baptism is one of the sacraments recognised by the Church of Scotland, the other being Holy Communion. In the baptismal service those appropriate adults profess their own faith and promise to give the child a Christian upbringing. In the case of adult baptism the person himself or herself makes the appropriate promise.
