Moderator Backs Blood Campaign

Monday November 4 2013

The Church of Scotland is backing an NHS campaign to increase the number of blood and organ donors in Scotland.

The Kirk is the latest church to take part in the fleshandblood campaign, which calls on people to look at being a donor as an act of Christian generosity.

The Moderator of the General Assembly, the Rt Rev Lorna Hood, said: "Offering our blood and organs is truly giving of ourselves in a quite profound way. As a parish minister and hospital chaplain I have witnessed the change in people's lives as they are brought from the edge of death to a new and fulfilling life. I see it as part of my Christian witness and discipleship and I hope as many people as possible sign up to this campaign.

"It really is the difference between life and death to those in desperate need of a blood transfusion or organ donation."

The Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service needs 5000 blood donations every week to meet the needs of patients in Scotland.

The fleshandblood campaign is the first time the NHS has worked with churches on a national scheme of this kind.
