Meeting with Muslim Council of Scotland

Tuesday December 3 2013

The Moderator of the General Assembly, Rt Rev Lorna Hood, met today with members of the Muslim Council of Scotland (MCS).

Mrs Hood spoke about recent meetings in interfaith meetings and discussions she has had with Humza Yusaf MSP and Wajid Shamsul Hasan, Pakistan High Commissioner. Representatives from the Church’s World Mission and Church and Society Councils discussed issues of concern focussing on the misuse of the Blasphemy Law in Pakistan and the need for protection of Christians in that country and the plight of Syrian refugees.

The MCS was thanked for their statement condemning the attack on worshippers at All Saints Church, Peshawar in October.

Dr Javed Gill, Convenor of MCS, and his colleagues hoped that more churches and mosques could work together so Christians and Muslims across Scotland could get to know each other and learn about each other’s faiths and communities.

There are 77,000 Muslims in Scotland, about 1.4% of the population and MCS tries to represent the community to government and civil society. Dr Gill also looked forward to the Church of Scotland taking the lead on community issues while all agreed that interfaith dialogue needs to take place in communities to have a real impact.
