'Tartan Pimpernel' Conference

Tuesday February 15 2022

The Scots Kirk in Paris is to host two conferences examining the life of its famous former minister, the Rev Donald Caskie.

Mr Caskie (1902-1983) was called to Paris in 1938. Refusing to leave when France fell to the Nazis in 1940, he became part of a resistance organisation that helped hundreds of allied sailors, soldiers and airmen escape the country. Betrayed and arrested, he was condemned to death but spared after a German chaplain appealed on his behalf.

His autobiography, ‘The Tartan Pimpernel’, published to help fund the post-war rebuilding of the Scots Kirk, made him a celebrity in the UK and is still in print today.

The ‘Faith in the Resistance’ conference will be led by Dick Hallam, a former soldier and amateur historian. He will retrace Mr Caskie’s footsteps during the War, discovering some of the people he met and unsung acts of heroism.

The conferences will take place on Saturday March 5, with sessions at 10.30am and 2.30pm. Copies of the Tartan Pimpernel will be on sale in aid of church funds.

To book a place, email scotskirkparis@orange.fr, stating whether you are reserving for the morning or afternoon session.
