Minister's Care Award

Monday January 6 2014

A Church of Scotland minister was among those honoured in the Quality Awards ceremony of the West London Mental Health Trust.

The Rev John McMahon, the trust's head of spiritual and pastoral care, was nominated for the ‘Caring to Celebrate Diversity’ award — "For going above and beyond to develop working relationships and engage with notably hard-to-reach areas of the community".

Leeanne McGee, Executive Director of High Secure Services, said: “John has demonstrated enthusiasm, commitment and inventiveness in all aspects of his role.  He has engaged with groups who are often hard to reach and he's done this with good humour, pragmatism and professionalism.

"The multi-faith service for the Broadmoor 150th anniversary was something special and he has brought together a diverse team of chaplains into an effective pastoral care team."

John, who was previously Lead Chaplain for NHS Lothian, is a member of the Presbytery of England. He moved to Broadmoor Hospital in Royal Berkshire, in April 2012, to further enhance his experience as a mental healthcare chaplain having worked within the NHS for just under a decade.

Broadmoor is a specialist service that provides assessment, treatment and care in conditions of high security for men from London and the south of England (similar to the specialist service provided in Scotland at The State Hospital, Carstairs).
