Starring role for minister's wife

Tuesday January 7 2014

Ruth Rankin with husband David and daughter Sophia

The wife of a Church of Scotland minister is one of the subjects of a new documentary TV series about life in and beyond the manse.

Ruth Rankin is the wife of the Rev David Rankin, minister of Kaimes Lockhart Memorial Church in Edinburgh. In Bean a' Mhinisteir (The Minister's Wife) she will be seen juggling her own work as a community arts officer, motherhood, and supporting David as he attempts to grow his congregation.

The six-part series, to be shown on BBC ALBA from this Friday looks at how the traditional role of Minister's wife has adapted to a changing world. Also featured are Mairi MacAuley, wife of a Free Church minister based in the Highlands; and Jo Moir, who is married to a Salvation Army officer and is an Army Captain herself.

Bean a' Mhinisteir starts this Friday, January 10 at 8.30pm. BBC ALBA is available on Freeview and BT Vision in Scotland. Throughout the UK, it is available on Sky 143, Virgin Media 161, Freesat 110 or via BBC iPlayer.
