A Sentimental Journey

A minister is currently on a sentimental journey from Longniddry to India, travelling with his daughter who was born in the country.

The Rev Mark Wilson and his daughter Gillian will make this private visit to meet friends and former colleagues in the Church of North India in Darjeeling, Kalimpong and the Eastern Duars. Gillian was born in Kalimpong when Mark was a Church of Scotland missionary to the Bodo tribal people.

They are taking a unique archive of the Church of Scotland's historical links with the area which Mark extracted from supplements to Life and Work covering the years 1882-1920.  This resulted in 400 A4 pages of information - recording the history of the area - which were then scanned and digitised onto CDs by Mark's grandson, Javan (18), so that the information will be easier to access and study in India.

"My wife served on the Church of Scotland's Asia Committee " Mark said, "And was sent to Lothian Presbyery to awaken interest in the Eastern Himalayan Church which became part of the Church of North India in 1970.  Today, there are 12 East Lothian churches with twinning links in the area."
