More than twenty charities and not-for-profit organisations have come together on a zero waste Christmas initiative to help tackle the cost of living crisis and other social injustices in a festive way.
The digital advent calendar, created by trade justice charity Transform Trade (formerly Traidcraft Exchange), features organisations tackling injustice both in the UK and internationally, including foodbank charity the Trussell Trust, MacMillan Cancer Support, African farmer charity Ripple Effect and campaign group Labour Behind the Label.
The digital Injustice Advent Calendar is free and gives participants the chance to countdown the days to Christmas by taking one positive action a day. Each daily calendar window gives an insight into the work of a charity or project, and a quick action to make the world a better place.
Transform Trade CEO Charlotte Timson said: “Christmas doesn’t have to mean spending money you don’t have, on things you don’t need, especially now with so many of us having to borrow more money simply to meet basic day to day payments. The cost of living crisis is affecting people around the world and this injustice advent calendar is a festive way to show solidarity with people here in the UK and thousands of miles away.
“There’s a huge variety of causes: from supporting food banks to stamping out modern slavery in fast fashion – you can start each day in December feeling like you’re taking positive action rather than simply consuming.”
The suggested actions include plastic-free Christmas hacks, promoting slavery-free chocolate, taking action on ocean chemical pollution, carrying out self-care as a radical feminist act, finding out how much fashion brands pay their workers and pushing for better support for people diagnosed with cancer. Each action is free and will take no longer than five minutes.
