Late minister's choir in memorial concert

Thursday January 16 2013

A Glasgow choir is holding a memorial concert in celebration of a minister and founder member, at his old church.

The concert by Sounds International is in memory of the late Rev Tom Morton, who rarely missed a rehearsal between the choir's formation in 2003 and his death, on January 2 last year, aged 93.

Tom (left) was a member of Burnside Church, where the concert will be held, but prior to that he was minister of Stonelaw Church in Rutherglen for more than 30 years. Twice Moderator of the Presbytery of Glasgow, he was well known in the south side of Glasgow, not only for his church work but also as a witty raconteur and compère at many of the choir’s charity concerts.

In fond memory of its oldest member, the choir will perform many of Tom’s favourite songs on the night, including his all-time favourite, ‘Jeanie With The Light Brown Hair’, which he used to sing to his wife, Netta, whose death preceded his by many years.

It is hoped that recordings of some of Tom's solos from his time at Stonelaw Church may be available on CD on the night.

The concert takes place at Burnside Church, Church Avenue, Burnside, Glasgow, at 7.30pm on Tuesday March 25. Entrance is £5/£3 concession, payable at the door. Proceeds to the Salvation Army.
