Former Moderator's BB Role

Tuesday January 28 2014

The Boys’ Brigade (BB), the UK’s longest-running voluntary uniformed youth organisation, has appointed the Very Rev Dr Andrew McLellan CBE as Chaplain.

Dr McLellan, whose family has been connected with The Boys’ Brigade since its foundation when his grandfather joined the 1st Glasgow Company in its first year of existence, was himself a member of the Boys’ Brigade, rising through the ranks to staff-sergeant, and gaining the Queen's Badge. Before his appointment to the Executive Board, he was Chaplain to three different BB companies and to the Edinburgh Battalion.

He said: “It is a great honour to be invited to be Brigade Chaplain. I have close associations with the organisation and I look forward to the opportunities I will have to meet and help members of the BB – from the youngest to the oldest.

“I’m excited about how vibrant The Boys’ Brigade is and its ability to remain relevant to young people through a programme of events and activities, while building confidence in the Christian Faith.”

The Boys’ Brigade’s Director for Scotland, Bill Stevenson, said: “We are delighted to welcome Andrew to the BB as Chaplain. His long relationship with the organisation will stand him in good stead as he meets with and helps many of the young members and leaders.”

Dr McLellan was the Moderator to the 2000 General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, and is currently Convener of the World Mission Council. He was Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector of Prisons for Scotland from 2002 to 2009.
