Moderator Makes History in Greece

Tuesday February 4 2014

The Rt Rev Lorna Hood has become the first ever Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland to be received by the heads of the Orthodox Church in Greece.

Mrs Hood met with His Beatitude Hieronymos II, the Archbishop of Athens and All Greece and the Primate of the Orthodox Church of Greece, yesterday in Athens.

Accompanied by representatives from the Church of Scotland's World Mission Council, Mrs Hood presented the Archbishop with a Celtic Cross to mark the 1450th anniversary of St Columba's arrival in Scotland.

She said: "It was exciting to be part of this historic moment. Although our churches  have many differences, this was a really fruitful conversation. It was important in itself and I hope this will continue our good relationship through the various international forums in which our churches meet together."

Discussions focused on the threats to democracy today, and on how to sustain and protect those whose faith is under threat.

Mrs Hood and representatives from the Church of Scotland have been visiting the Greek Evangelical Church, the small Presbyterian Church in Greece.

Accompanying them on the visit to meet Greece's most senior religious leaders was Dimitris Boukis, who is General Secretary of the Greek Evangelical Church.
