Trauma Focus for Denis Duncan Lecture

Tuesday July 18 2023

This year’s Denis Duncan lecture will focus on how churches can help communities and individuals respond to trauma.

The November 30 lecture will be delivered by the Rev Hilary Ison (right), an Anglican priest, chaplain and theological educator. She has training in exploring traumatic events in individual and group settings, and most recently has lead in the Tragedy and Congregations Project, a project resourcing churches to respond in a healthy way to the impact of tragedies, whether local and global.

In the context of the ongoing trauma resulting from the Covid-19 pandemic, and the anxiety of social, economic and climate uncertainty, Hilary’s lecture will explore what happens in our bodies, emotions and souls in the context of understanding trauma. She will explore ways in which we can reconnect with ourselves, each other and with our own resources, in a more positive and generative way.

The online event will include a time of prayer and space to engage with the pre-recorded lecture through discussions and questions.

The annual lecture, named in memory of the Church of Scotland minister and journalist Denis Duncan, was inaugurated in 2017. It is run jointly by the Church of Scotland and the Guild of Health and St Raphael and focuses on links between health and faith. Previous speakers include the Very Rev David Lunan, the Rev Dr Doug Gay, Dr Ruth Valerio and the Rev Dr Richard Tiplady. One of the aims of the event is to encourage churches to be hubs for healing for the whole community through the Guild’s Healthy Healing Hub project.
