'Displacement' Theme for Just Festival

This year’s Just Festival in Edinburgh is focused around the theme of ‘Displacement’.

Formerly the Festival of Spirituality and Peace, and now more than 20 years old, the Just Festival is now a fixture of Edinburgh’s Fringe. It consists of performances, exhibitions and discussions around themes of social justice and human rights, mostly in St John’s Church at the west end of Princes St.

Highlights of this year’s programme include ‘The Fourth R’, a piece of contemporary dance and climate activism from Canadian group Dance Fachin, and an exhibition of artwork created by Ukrainians and Edinburgh locals. Music includes a concert of solo violin and electronics, Scottish bluegrass band the Fountaineers and a guitar and baritone duo from Texas. Open panel discussions will focus on the experience of migrants and refugees, past and present; and there will be a talk by Syrian artist and author Issam Kourbaj on his most recent book.

Festival manager Miranda Heggie says: “When looking at the theme “Displacement”, I wanted to try and capture the unease that that word can cause, and to look at the concept of displacement from multiple angles. I hope that this festival, in some small way, can bring together a few of these angles and link with our shared humanity.”
