Moderator Opens Kirk Centre

Tuesday February 11 2014

Eight years of effort and collaboration came to fruition at the weekend as the Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland opened Cults Kirk Centre in Aberdeen.

The centre, which is part of Cults Parish Church, offers a peaceful environment for people within the surrounding community to enjoy an array of activities, including prayer, meditation, ceilidhs and coffee mornings.

The Rt Rev Lorna Hood was invited to the opening as part of her visit to the Presbytery of Aberdeen, where she also gave a sermon at the University of Aberdeen for its Founders’ Day celebrations.

Mrs Hood said: “Cults Kirk Centre has been beautifully designed and has already become a hub of the community it is in. It gives you a wonderful feeling when you go into it and I’m sure many people will benefit from a place like this.

“The creation of the centre is an example of what can be done when people in a community work together. So much work has gone into opening the centre. The people involved should take great credit.”

Minister of Cults Parish Church, the Rev Ewen Gilchrist, said the official opening by the Moderator was 'worthy recognition for all the hard work done in the background to getting the centre off the ground'. He added: “It will take time to see what we really have here but the signs so far are that it is a centre for vibrant activity. We must learn how to use it and how to share it – that’s the challenge.”
