Ecumenical Service to Mark St Margaret Declaration

Tuesday October 31 2023

An ecumenical service will take place in Glasgow next month marking the anniversary of the signing of the St Margaret Declaration of friendship between the Church of Scotland and the Roman Catholic Church in Scotland.

The service in St Aloysius Church will celebrate the life of St Margaret of Scotland, a significant figure for both churches. Queen of King Malcolm III, she was instrumental in bringing the church in Scotland into line with Rome in the 11th century, and founder of the Abbey in Dunfermline, now the site of a Church of Scotland church and where the declaration that bears her name was signed on November 16 last year.

In the declaration the two churches ‘recognise each other as brothers and sisters in Christ, and wish to express our friendship and respect for one another as fellow Christians, citizens and partners in announcing the Kingdom of God in our land’.

It was signed on November 16 last year by the Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, the Very Rev Dr Iain Greenshields, and Archbishop Leo Cushley, leader of Scotland’s Catholics, in the presence of HRH the Princess Royal.

The evening prayer service will take place in St Aloysius Church, Rose Street, Glasgow, on November 17 at 7pm. It will be attended by civic and church leaders, and be followed by refreshments.
